History of Outdoor Weddings in the UK

A wedding is one of the most important days in a person’s life and the beginning of a new chapter. Yet, the main law that governs marriage in England and Wales has mostly remained the same since 1836 , making it outdated and restricting to couples planning their day.

How andwhere marriages can take place was tightly regulated and differed depending on the type of wedding taking place. Beforehand, couples were restricted between choosing a religious or a civil ceremony, and with few exceptions, all couples had to have their wedding in a place of worship, a register office, or a venue approved for civil weddings.

As a result, civil ceremonies were restricted to taking place indoors, or within a permanent outdoor structure, preventing couples from having a wider choice in how they celebrate their day. Failure to comply with the legal requirements resulted in the marriage not being legally recognised.

How it all changed

In July 2021, temporary measures were introduced to allow civil weddings and partnerships to take place outside for the first time after the pandemic had stalled weddings throughout the lockdown periods. Due to expire in April 2022, a government consultation found that 96% of respondents backed making the change a permanent measure, while 93% supported extending it to religious weddings.

As a result, in March 2022, the Marriages and Civil Partnerships (Approved Premises) Regulations 2005 act was revised to allow legal outdoor civil weddings and civil partnership registrations to take place at venues with an indoor civil ceremony licence in England and Wales.

Under the new revisions, ceremonies are now able to happen fully outdoors or under a partially covered structure, as long as it meets public access and signage requirements.

This grants couples the flexibility and choice to have their whole wedding ceremony outside on a venue’s grounds, with far greater control and personalisation over the venue and how their ceremony will look.

Indian weddings are known for being lavish and extravagant with many pre-wedding traditions, rituals and timeless customs. Of course, the journey to the big day of an Asian wedding is a long one, with months of planning and pre-wedding rituals to abide by. Indian weddings are traditionally considered as a marriage of two families, rather than a marriage between the bride and groom. The concept behind Indian weddings is that the entire family and the surrounding community are all involved in this monumental occasion.

With any wedding, there are always do’s and don’ts for both the bride and groom to follow. However, with Indian weddings, these are even more important due to family traditions and religions. In this guide, we take a look at some of the do’s and don’ts for every Indian wedding groom.

Meeting the parents

Of course, you want your parents to be happy with your choice of partner, and this is significantly more important with Indian weddings. For any groom, it’s important to prepare your outfit(s) several days before the wedding so that everything is prepared and ready to go. For Indian grooms, this is considerably more important, with possible different elements to the outfit, including the dupatta, turban, safa and kalgi, to name just a few. With any of these items missing, the outfit can look incomplete.

Clothes worn to an Asian wedding do require some coordination and planning as you might want your outfit to compliment your bride’s outfit. This guide explains the process of what to consider when choosing your Asian wedding cake, from our very own wedding specialist.

For those of us with a sweet tooth, a wedding cake can be one of the most important parts of the big day, so it’s crucial to get it perfect. Choosing the perfect wedding cake can be complicated with so many choices these days. After all, how do you choose a wedding cake that will confidently live up to your big day?

If you’ve been reading our Asian wedding checklist , you’ll know that the process of choosing your wedding cake should begin at least six months prior to your wedding. Of course, during the wedding season, all suppliers often become booked up soon in advance, so you’ll want to carefully time when to get in touch with your chosen baker.

This guide explains the process of what to consider when choosing your Asian wedding cake, from our very own wedding specialist, Dipti Patel, who is also the owner of one of our approved suppliers, the Rose & Violet Cake Company .

When creating a wedding cake, Dipti uses the finest ingredients so that the cake not only looks amazing, but it tastes light, luxurious and delectable. 1. Find Your Baker

Finding a baker suited to your style is one of the most important steps of choosing your wedding cake. After all, each baker will have their own area of expertise - some may be more familiar with fondant icing, whereas others may be experts of buttercream icing.

Word of mouth is the best tried-and-tested method of finding a suitable baker, otherwise, a visit to wedding fayres can be an excellent way to meet a variety of bakers and get to know them before making a decision. Wedding fayres allow couples to meet local bakers and test out samples of wedding cake before committing to a private consultation.

2. The Consultation

Once you’ve chosen your baker, you’ll need to request a consultation with them to explain your expectations and what you have in mind. At this point, you’ll be discussing all the details regarding the wedding cake with your chosen baker, so you’ll want to be prepared with a few rough ideas, if you're looking for inspiration try Pinterest.

Don’t panic if you’re not too sure what you’re looking for, as your baker will have a collection of photos from their previous bakes to inspire you and your partner.

Rose & Violet Cake Company starts off with an initial telephone consultation, moving onto a more detailed consultation including cake tasting. This allows couples to bring their ideas, imagination & creativity to the table allowing them to design and create their perfect wedding cake.

During this consultation, Dipti likes to get to know her clients to understand their personalities as a couple, their creativity, decor, theme and style. This helps to create a bespoke cake to encapsulate all of these entities which represents them on their wedding day.

From this point, Dipti begins the process of designing and creating sketches for the cake, which can typically be between three to four sketches to show different designs and styles. From these sketches, once they’re emailed over to the couple, the couple will be able to tell Dipti the bits they like and don’t like, before Dipti can go into a final design sketch. This final design sketch will be the design the couple fall in love with for their wedding day, a centerpiece at their reception for guests to admire and for the couple to be wow’d when they make their grand entrance.

3. Size of the Cake

Before deciding the size of your cake, you’ll need to have a rough estimate of the number of guests attending your wedding/wedding reception and whether the cake will be your main desert as this will also determine your portion sizes & amount required.Generally, three tiers will serve between 50 - 100 guests, four tiers for around 150 and five tiers for around 200 guests or more. All of these figures really depend on the type of ingredients, the layers and how big the portion sizes are. Typically if guests are having another type of desert, the cake will be 1 inch x 1 inch, if the cake is the desert, it is often cut 1 inch x 2 inch.

If you’re opting for a smaller wedding, don’t feel pressured to have a large wedding cake, as you don’t really want lots of cake left-over and possibly going to waste. Your wedding cake will need to be appropriately sized and depending on the number of guests attending your wedding, your cake baker will be able to advise on the cake size.

Tip : If your reception has high ceilings, you may like to consider increasing the height of your cake by adding more tiers or columns between the tiers. Nowadays most couples to avoid wasting cake will opt for a grand wedding cake consisting of 5 or 6 tiers, with only one tier which is real, the rest of the cake being dummy tiers. Your guests will never know.

4. Cake Tasting

Something that might be the most exciting part of the wedding planning process has to be the cake tasting! Cake tasting is a big deal and is an excellent opportunity for the couple to get involved and get to know their baker. This part is often in the form of the second consultation appointment, so you may have already spoken to your chosen baker a handful of times.

During tastings, the couple are invited to sample exemplary wedding cakes which allows them to ask questions and review different flavours, fillings, icing and cake sponges. Feel free to take some research along with you to your wedding cake tasting appointment, including flowers, magazine cut-outs, screenshots or photos with any detail that truly inspires you.

Whilst having a beautiful wedding cake appeals to the visual senses, you’ll want to make sure it tastes incredible, too!

Dipti says “With cake tasting, my clients get a chance to sample cakes of various different flavours depending on their choice. They may choose a lemon drizzle cake, a toffee cake or even a delicious red velvet cake, which is something different from the ordinary vanilla sponge cake. I like to ensure that the cake tastes as good as it’s going to look on the big day.”

Before making up your mind on the taste, you’ll need to establish the environment in which your wedding cake will be in during your wedding day. If you’re having an outdoor wedding or in a hot room, you’ll want to ensure that any buttercream style cake can be stored in the venue's fridge until the last minute to avoid any melting. For this reason, confiding in your baker to find out which icing is most suitable for your wedding day can sometimes save your cake.

Tip : Not quite sure which flavour to have? Don’t be afraid to have different flavours across multiple tiers.

5. Choosing a design

The wedding cake is your opportunity to express your style, so try not to overthink your decisions. Your wedding cake doesn’t need to ultimately match your wedding decor, however, you’ll want to at least make sure that it fits in with the overall style of the day and the cake is an extra decoration to be admired and photographed by many of your guests.

Get inspired by creating mood boards of styles, elements and themes that you both love. The question has been popped and the ring is on - now you have to commence the wedding planning! With many details and tasks to take care of, it can seem very overwhelming on where to begin.

If you’re currently planning your wedding, you’ll understand the extent of wedding planning and how much time goes into organising. In fact, the average Asian wedding takes between 350 and 500 hours to prepare. If you're familiar with Asian weddings, this won't come as a surprise. There are many events that form part of the celebration and these take place over a number days, so planning at least 12 months in advance is advised.

If you give yourself enough time to plan your wedding and take each step at a time, the planning will be far less overwhelming, meaning that you can enjoy those exciting months, pre-wedding. To ensure you're able to enjoy the planning process, we would suggest focusing on only a few tasks per month.

Asian weddings are a beautiful spectacle and differ considerably from any other wedding. We understand the time, thought and planning that goes into making Asian weddings very special.

12 months before

Defining your budget

Weddings are one of the biggest expenses in our lifetime, so it’s understandable that most couples will want to reduce costs wherever they can. Of course, this depends on who’s paying for the big day! Not only is it important to create a budget so you have an idea of how much your wedding will cost, but it’s equally as important to stick to it.

Find out if your chosen venue allows you to bring in your own caterer as this could be a cost saving from the start. At Ladywood, we allow you to choose your own chosen caterer from a long list of preferred suppliers. We also include corkage within the venue price hire, meaning that you can buy your chosen quantity and types of beverages for your guests, without any further charges.

Choosing the venue & guest list

At this point, you’re going to need to work out approximately how many guests you’ll be inviting to your wedding. The number of guests on your guest list will affect later decisions, such as the venue, catering, transportation and accommodation.

Some couples might prefer to choose their own date or may contact the Priest to confirm auspicious dates before booking a venue. Of course, wedding venues become fully booked very quickly, so you might need to be fairly flexible.

Also make sure if your venue is able to provide a Mandap, as you may need to contact a separate designer to hire this for the ceremony.

It’s always recommended to have three venues in mind when you decide, so you can make a carefully inspected decision on which venue is the best for your special day.

Booking the priest / registrar

Similar to the wedding venue, priests also become fully booked very quickly, so this is something you’ll want to book as soon as you have booked your venue.

11 months before

Save the date

Once the date is chosen and confirmed, you’ll want to send out the ‘Save-the-Date’ to your guests. This is important particularly if you have guests travelling from afar or those who will need to book time off work in advance. The ‘Save-the-Date’ is usually a card, magnet or keepsake that lets your intended guests know of your intention to marry and is sent out prior to the formal invitations.

10 months before

Hair & makeup

It’s around now that the bride will want to begin arranging appointments for their hair and makeup. This is the perfect opportunity to liaise with stylists and to try different styles to suit the bride’s sari and lehenga. Wedding hairdressers and makeup artists have a busy schedule so be sure to get in touch as soon as possible to book your preferred Hair & Makeup Artist.

Choosing the decor company

Decoration companies get booked up in advance, so it is advised to not only consider what type of decor you want, but also who can provide it for your big day. You should look at different companies portfolio’s to see how they work and what they offer. Some decor company’s offer the full package - mandap, decor, dj etc whereas some only do mandap and reception decor.

As your wedding plans evolve, you might find that you want changes to your wedding decorations and that’s absolutely fine. Your chosen company should work with you for as long as it takes. Until you’ve created a look that you can’t wait to reveal to your wedding guests.

Apply for a marriage licence

When applying for a marriage licence, you’ll need to make sure you have all the necessary paperwork and documentation. This includes your passports, birth certificate, a utility bill and details of where and when you intend to get married.

You’ll also need to register with your local registrar to inform them that you intend to marry. This will then follow with several questions about the legitimacy of your relationship. After this, you’ll be added to a list which is made publicly available. This allows any objections to be made before your marriage takes place.

Choosing your Caterer

Catering plays an important role in your wedding, as the food can really make your special day stand out. You might also want to consider looking into having live food stations as a personal touch for your guests.

Book your photographer and videographer

Wedding photographers and videographers play a tremendous part in any wedding day. Being one of the most exciting and important days of your life, your wedding day usually flies by, so you’ll want to ensure you have a photographer and videographer to capture every joyous moment of the occasion.

As photographers and videographers book up fast, you’ll want to do your research and book as soon as you can. Check with your chosen photographer to see if they can meet your requirements. 9 months before

Designing invitations

Now that your guests have had the time to sort out travel arrangements and are aware of the chosen date, you’ll want to begin designing your invites. There are millions of companies out there to choose from which offer beautifully designed wedding invites, so choosing your favourite design can be tricky! You won’t need to send out your invites for a few months, due to changes of plans or further details needing to be confirmed.

Choose Bridesmaids and Bestman/men

With the wedding plans in progress, you’ll need to begin making decisions on your bridesmaids and bestman/men. This is a big step, as your chosen bridal and groom party will have a huge involvement in the wedding events.

Planning your Bridal Shower and Stag Do

Whilst most brides tend to just have the Mehndi ceremony as their bridal shower, modern-day brides might choose to have an additional bridal shower several months before the wedding in the form of a hen-do. This isn’t keeping in usual tradition, but for the bride, it’s an extra excuse to celebrate the engagement with her female friends and family members, in a modern setting. Also at this point, the groom and his party should begin planning the stag-do.

Book live entertainment

It wouldn’t be an Asian wedding without fantastic entertainment! Popular live entertainment for Asian weddings includes violinists who play bollywood music, bollywood dancers, harpers or pianists.

Hiring your live entertainment nine months prior to the wedding might seem a little premature, however, the best DJ’s, wedding bands and performers will become fully booked very soon into the year. If your wedding is taking place throughout the wedding season (between May-August) then you’ll want to make sure the live entertainment is sorted earlier on.

8 months before

Arranging the grooms arrival

Every groom wants to show up on his special day in style. Whether it’s a helicopter, horse and carriage or a luxury wedding car - you’ll want to arrange the transport around eight months in advance. Again, this is due to the popularity of bespoke transport around this time of year. Wedding cars in particular will usually have been booked for every weekend over the summer.

As some of your guests are likely to be travelling from a long distance, ensuring that there are transport options available, along with accomodation and local information is always helpful. You might want to consider booking minibuses, coaches and taxis for your guests, especially if your wedding is in-between more than one venue.

As you’ll be sending out your invitations later on, you may want to provide the guest transport companies with exact numbers in around two/three months time. 7 months before

Florists

At this point, you’ll want to get in touch with your chosen florist. Hopefully, by now you’ll have an idea of the overall theme and colour choices you’d like at your wedding. This relates to the flowers you decide to have during your special day, as flowers are the perfect way of incorporating colour into your theme. For the more eco-conscious couple, many are turning to paper flowers which are not only a cheaper option but great for the environment as they can be recycled and more importantly - saved as a reminder of your special day.

6 months before

Wedding rings

If you didn’t exchange rings with your partner during your engagement, now is the best time to shop. Choosing your wedding rings together is an exciting step in preparing to bind your marriage.

Shopping for outfits and accessories

The most important moment for any bride and groom-to-be is choosing their outfits for the big day. It’s usually recommended to shop for these around six months before the wedding. You’ll also want to think about the outfits for the Roka, Mehendi, Haldi, Sangeet wedding ceremony and reception.

Order the wedding cake

You’ll need to start thinking about your chosen baker to design your wedding cake. This is a time to taste different varieties of cake and discuss your preferred size, colour, design and ingredients. 5 months before

The honeymoon

The honeymoon is a special holiday a newly-wed couple embarks on together to signify and celebrate the beginning of their marriage. With Asian weddings, there are several customs and traditions that take place before and after the wedding, so you’ll most likely want to book your honeymoon to start a few days later.

4 months before

Pre-wedding photoshoot

Now is the best time to get in touch with your chosen photographer for a pre-wedding photoshoot. This is the best opportunity to get to know your wedding photographer to feel comfortable in front of the camera ahead of your big day, as well as capture beautiful images signifying your engagement together.

Arranging Mehndi

Around four months before the wedding, you’ll need to commence plans for your Mehndi. If you are having your Mehndi at a separate location to your wedding ceremony, then you’ll need to book with your desired venue.

At this point, you’ll also need to start handing out invitations to your guests to invite them to the Mehndi, as well as organising the food, drinks, photographer and even booking the Mehndi artist. Normally, the Bride has her own henna artist, mainly due to the time it takes to do Bridal design on hands and feet.

Sending your wedding invites

Around four months before the wedding, you’ll want to send your guests their wedding invitations. It’s also key to keep track of who has and hasn’t confirmed their attendance.

3 months before

Order wedding favours

Wedding favours are placed throughout your wedding tables as a way of saying thank you to your guests for attending your special day. Very popular wedding favours you could use include organza bags filled with sweet cultural treats, cookies, chocolates, meringues, scented candles, soaps or tea and coffee.

Update passport

If you’re planning on leaving the country shortly after becoming wed, you will need to update your passports around now. The name on your passport must match the name you use when you book your travel, so you’ll need to take this into account.

It’s worth remembering that you can change the name on your passport three months before the wedding. The new passport containing your new name will be post-dated, meaning that it cannot be used until after your date of marriage.

If you’ve booked your flights and hotel under your new name, but your passport still has your old name, you might find yourself with several problems.

2 months before

Finalise wedding decor

Now that the wedding is just two months away, you’ll be thinking of which table arrangements you’d like to adorn your wedding tables. Whilst Asian weddings comprise several events over the course of a few days, you should also state which type of ceremony the decor is for, to avoid any confusion.

Typical table decorations at Asian weddings include beautiful lanterns, tree-inspired centrepieces and of course, very colourful and vibrant flowers and decorations. You may also need to order place cards and a large seating plan so your guests know which seat is theirs, or alternatively, you can get creative and make your own.

Choose wedding songs

Music plays a huge part in any wedding, but especially an Asian wedding. If you haven’t done this already, you’ll need to start choosing the music for your wedding. Discuss with your partner which songs you would like to add to the musical itinerary and in which order.

You will need to choose daytime background music, entrance songs for bridesmaids, the groom's entrance and the brides entrance along with their grand reception entrance in the evening.

Practicing the first dance

Whilst you don’t want to over-anticipate every detail of the big day, it is best to be prepared. Once you’ve decided on a ‘first song’, practising your first dance is a good idea. It is a key moment of the wedding day with lots of eyes on the newlywed couple.

Time plan

It’s now time to create a detailed wedding and reception time plans, along with any other wedding events you have planned. You will also need to consider printing off any literature for your guests, so that they are aware of when each event will take place throughout the days.

Seating plan

Organising the seating plan for your wedding is one of the trickiest steps in planning your Asian wedding, particularly as they tend to have around 500 guests. The wedding party will be easy but arranging where the rest of your nearest and dearest are seated can sometimes be difficult. The best way to choose your seating plan is to not be afraid of changing your mind. Weddings are a time to bring two families together, so a table plan which seats guests together who haven’t met before isn’t a big deal.

Confirming all bookings

With just two weeks to go before the big day, it is recommended to get in touch with your venue, suppliers, and contacts from your transportation hire and entertainment. This will give you peace of mind that everything will be running smoothly.

Speeches

Make sure that all speeches have been written and that guests who are speaking are aware of when they are giving their speech and which microphone they will be using.

1 week to go

Pick up your outfits

One week before the wedding, arranging to collect your Lehenga, Sari and Sherwani should be on your agenda. This is an exciting day for any bride and groom. It is recommended to have a dress rehearsal after collecting your outfits and accessories.

If the bride is wearing heeled shoes on the wedding day, a top tip is for her to practice walking in her shoes, as she will be wearing them for a long time.

Pack for honeymoon

If you’re embarking on your honeymoon shortly after the wedding, you’ll most likely want to pack around now. This is also the best time to pick up any travel essentials which you might need for your trip.

Hair and beauty treatments

In the days leading up to a wedding, the bride and groom typically schedule time for necessary hair and beauty treatments ahead of the big day. This includes having the final haircut for the couple.

Real Wedding Guide: An Indian Wedding With A French Twist

Shay and Thibaut had their dream wedding at Ladywood Estate towards the end of July 2019 after meeting in London around nine years ago. With Shay’s Indian and Thibaut’s French heritage, their wedding had a certain je ne sais quoi, merging both backgrounds to create an unforgettable Asian wedding with a French twist which lasted three days.

To celebrate their marriage, we decided to interview them to find out more about their day, including the decor, theme, wedding setting, outfits and of course, we even asked them about the highlight of their special day.

Wedding Setting

Shay and Thibaut chose to marry at Ladywood Estate after feeling compelled to pick a venue that combined both quality and idyllic surroundings. Situated in the peaceful countryside of Leicestershire, Ladywood Estate Asian wedding venue boasted a luxury and unique location for their special day.

On the third day of their wedding celebrations, Shay and Thibaut had a relaxed get-together with their family and friends at Ladywood Estate with delicious food and drinks before everyone departed. As Ladywood Estate is a flexible wedding venue, most couples decide to make the most of their wedding and have the venue over two or three days.

Decor and Theme

The decor for their wedding was by Krystal Group who are locally based in Leicester. On the first day of the civil ceremony, the couple opted for a simple and elegant silk flower arch and table dressing to adapt with their French theme of woodlands. During the evening Mehndi, Shay and Thibaut went for vibrant colours with a small dancefloor, a swing and stylish food carts.

The decor on day two of the Indian wedding ceremony was not short of vibrance nor colour, with a beautiful bespoke flower wall and mandap leading into the luxurious evening reception with dark blue tables and floral centerpieces.

Wedding Outfits

If you’ve been to an Asian wedding before or you’re currently in the process of planning your upcoming day, you’ll know that there are many traditions and ceremonies involved, meaning that several outfit changes are no surprise.

Shay decided to wear a traditional white wedding dress for the civil ceremony, a coloured outfit for the Mehndi, a heavily embroidered wedding gown in neutral tones for the Indian wedding then followed by her evening dress.

Thibaut wore a classic navy blue suit for both the civil ceremony and Mehndi, followed by a navy blue and gold sherwani for the Indian ceremony and a light blue jacket and navy blue trousers for the evening reception.

Getting Ready

Both the bride and the groom were situated in the bridal suite and groom suite of Ladywood Estate prior to the wedding where they were getting ready.

Shay says “Before the wedding there were mixed feelings of nerves and excitement to get the event started. Making sure everything was ready and perfect for our guests’ arrival was the only stressful part of the day, but The Ladywood Team made sure the day ran so smoothly and we had nothing to worry about!”

The Wedding Reception

Shay and Thibaut’s wedding reception consisted of approximately 180 guests who were welcomed with pre-dinner drinks in the Ladywood Orangery, which created the perfect setting for a champagne reception with a private terrace and woodland setting.

They then made their entrance to Dhol players and their chosen DJ. Afterwards, Shay, Thibaut and their wedding guests went on to their delicious food, speeches and dancing when the Dhol and guest Sax players did a set with the DJ.

The Cuisine

Amongst all the exciting wedding traditions, food plays a big starring role for many. Catering plays an important part in your wedding, as the food can really make your special day stand out.

On the first day of the wedding celebrations, the couple opted for a buffet lunch and a Mehndi buffet dinner, which was catered for by Indigo Leicester , who are one of our approved caterers at Ladywood. With the groom being of French heritage, the tasty cuisine during their wedding reception was mostly Indian with a French twist, catered by the Bandook.

Wedding Photography

Wedding photographers and videographers play a tremendous part in any wedding day. Your wedding day usually flies by, so you’ll want to ensure you have a photographer or videographer to capture every joyous moment of the occasion

Shay and Thibaut decided to use the highly-talented Dragos Ionita at Glamour Weddings for the photography during their special day. Glamour Weddings attended the wedding with a small team who also filmed the videography to capture every moment of the day.

Ladywood’s country house wedding venue is set in 100 acres of parkland and gardens, featuring two lakes and 22 acres of woodland which give the Estate its name. Ladywood Estate is set in the most beautiful surroundings and looks great from every angle and aerial shot.

The Highlight

With any wedding, there always will be a ‘highlight’ which makes the day significantly more special. As Asian weddings usually occur over the course of a few days, choosing just one highlight is even more difficult!

We asked Shay and Thibaut about their highlight of their wedding celebrations. Shay said “Seeing all of our loved ones in one place and there for us made the day so special. We had around 20 nationalities represented from all over the world and seeing them so happy and clearly enjoying themselves was the highlight of our day. This was the first Indian wedding for many of our guests. It’s amazing that a lot of them are still talking about the experience to this day!

Wedding Advice for Other Couples

The average Asian wedding takes between 350 and 500 hours to prepare and organise, which may come as a surprise to some. To provide you with some words of wisdom when planning your wedding, we asked Shay and Thibaut for some wedding advice that they would give to other couples who are in the same process of planning their wedding.

They said “When it comes to preparation, you should divide and conquer with both the bride and groom involved in planning. This will lessen the pressure and balance from both sides, which in our case, was our French and Indian influences. Stay organised and list all the small things so you don’t forget them closer to the time of your celebrations.

“On the day, make sure to relax, enjoy and take in every moment as you’ll have your loved ones around looking after you. After all your hard work, you deserve to enjoy it!”

During the celebrations there was a lot of anticipation and overwhelming emotions of happiness, excitement and not wanting the weekend to end! Like many other couples, Shay and Thibaut suffered a sense of ‘comedown’ from all the joy, love and positive energy felt throughout the weekend, with great relief that the event went exactly as planned.

Ladywood Estate received a thank you card from Shay and Thibaut after their special day, which reads “A huge thank you for letting us marry in the most beautiful venue and making everything so seamless from start to finish. Everything went as planned! A massive and special thank you to Dipti who just made the day run so smoothly to the point we had absolutely nothing to worry about. What a genius team, we loved every minute of working with you and getting to know you.”

Shay also adds “Dipti, Jan and Mike were brilliant in coordinating our entire event, making sure things were running smoothly and on time whilst also ensuring our vendors were working hard in the background without the guests even realising. The turnaround for each event was done seamlessly with Jan, Mike and Dipti always on site and on hand whenever we needed them.

“Mike knew also exactly how to make us feel unique and special and immediately alleviated all our concerns in our first meeting by showing us all the possibilities that the venue offered. It was great to have him show a lot of examples of other weddings and he gave us a lot of great contacts to work with, which made our decision very easy. ”

You’ve booked your special day, chosen your caterers, booked your entertainment and most likely started thinking about your wedding decor. However, one thing you might like to add to your Asian wedding checklist is wedding cinematography coupled with photography as a package.

Wedding videos are one of the main aspects of any wedding, with the ability for the bride, groom, family and friends to cherish each moment of their wedding coming together, forever. Cinematic wedding videography allows you to have a multi-dimensional and multi-sensory experience, which you can show future generations to come.

Many couples are unsure of how cinematography works and what the differences are compared to standard photography and videography. We interviewed Amit from The Director’s Cut , who are a high fashion wedding cinematography company, to answer commonly asked questions related to cinematography and to explain the process of how cinematography works.

The Director’s Cut started off around eight years ago with Amit and his brother, who were both passionate about cinematography from a really young age. Kamal studied film and multimedia communications and began his career at weekends through wedding referrals and friends.

With the vision of discreet talent and natural capture, The Director’s Cut began interviewing in London, Leicester and Birmingham, and trained their team for real life scenarios and working under pressure. The team are trained to become more invisible during recording at wedding celebrations, to receive better and natural reactions.

Now, the team has grown, including head Photographers, head Cinematographers, Logistics Managers and also a Chief Editor. On a typical wedding day, the team usually consists of 2 photographers & 2 cinematographers, however some packages are smaller or larger depending on each couple’s requirement.

What is Cinematography?

Cinematography, or also referred to as cinematic wedding videography, is the art of photography and visual storytelling to produce outstanding wedding videos with creative visual elements to bring the film to life. If you’re looking to create a wedding video that plays at your heartstrings and allows you to relive your day, rather than simply reminiscing, then cinematography should be on your wedding list.

Angles, lighting, narrative storytelling and emotion are the distinguishing features of cinematic filming. Cinematography combines creativity with storytelling to produce a captivating film to display emotions and feelings. Most cinematographers will interlink meaningful soundbites of precious speeches and messages to create a seamless storyline of your special day.

Cinematographers capture magical moments of the day and various angles and perspectives of the day to create a wonderful video that weaves together the special moments of your Asian wedding.

Unlike photographers and videographers, cinematographers usually work as a team with a camera operator and light assistants. Some cinematography techniques focus on camera movement, camera placement, shot composition, shot size, focus and lighting.

Wedding cinematography is very different compared to classic wedding videography. Videography requires skill, patience and creativity, whereas cinematography also requires vision, research, planning and the use of special equipment to produce a cinematic wedding film.

Cinematic wedding videography contains dynamic storylines full of emotion and elevates the traditional wedding video. Videography tends to be very similar for most couples, however, cinematography can be a fun way of making a personalised cinematic film experience unique to a couple on their wedding day.

Both cinematography and videography have their advantages, which solely depend on whether you’d like a unique wedding film with every element of emotion, love, drama, song and dance, or a simple video capturing the moments of your wedding day.

Types of Filming Settings

The Director’s Cut uses natural light where possible to replicate a natural and classy feel, which also makes couples feel less conscious that they are being filmed. Where there are harsh shadows indoors, they use specific lighting indoors to light up darker corners. Strobe lighting can be used to light up parts of the room at once. With outdoor shoots, Amit and his team use a light-reflector strobe, ie softboxes or beauty dishes, to reflect light and create more crisp photos.

In the evening of a wedding, additional lighting can be used to capture an intimate and natural ambience, using colour soft gels or even tea lights to add more creativity. If the weather is windy, audio is imperative hence specialist microphones with sound mufflers are used to capture specific details.

Types of Filming Equipment

Drones are becoming more commonly used in wedding cinematography, with drones now being equipped with higher-quality cameras, intelligent flight modes and stabilisers to keep the camera steady and stable for more professional footage and high-definition aerial filming. Using drones in cinematography requires a lot of time, patience, planning and practice to produce a beautiful and professional cinematic film.

Cranes can be used for recording stability when creating moving shots using a simple remote control. Whilst cranes take filming up to the next level, they are becoming less popular as they are very ‘clunky’ and can affect wedding decor. A polecam is generally the preferred option compared to cranes as they are more discreet and can be used at a higher angle.

With a gimbal the team can capture incredible ‘shake - free’ and cinematic images from various angles. With rotating the camera smoothly in different directions, the creativity of the head cinematographer really shines, giving an immersive and beautiful video for every client.

Mirrorless cameras are more efficient, modern and can create ultra high-quality 4K video. Whilst mirrorless cameras do not have a mirror, light shines through the lens onto the sensor, then is processed and displayed either on a very small monitor or an electronic viewfinder.

For a sharper and better quality picture, prime lenses are used to create shots with low-light performance and are ideal for landscapes, portraits or even the smallest details such as wedding rings and jewellery. Telephoto lenses are often used to create close up angles from a longer distance.

Cinematography Editing Software

With cinematography, there are thousands of editing software out there to choose from. The Director’s Cut uses Adobe Premiere for editing their shots, with it being one of the best and most popular software available on the market. Adobe Premiere can be used to edit the raw footage, create cinematic edits, creative highlights and trailers.

Editing looks at colour corrections, angles and client requests. When The Director’s Cut works with Adobe Premiere, they can fine-tune content which is professionally created for the bride and groom to share with their loved ones.

The Process of Cinematography

Cinematography involves a long process of planning and preparation. It requires two logistics managers who are professional photographers and cinematographers, but very technically minded and organised. These managers act as the point of contact for a bride and groom.

The Director’s Cut ’s logistics managers are responsible for overlooking the full itinerary and any cinematic requests. Every client has their own dedicated logistics manager, as it is vital to build a rapport and understand the type of schedule and any special moments or surprises, hence these are planned and recorded carefully. Once the logistics manager carries out a final meeting to iron out any details, a detailed call sheet is created for the team to ensure nothing important is missed.

They will also need to understand the layout of each room in the venue, the timings and how long the team is needed for during the wedding celebrations.

What Comes with a Typical Cinematography and Photography Package?

Cinematography packages vary depending on the budget. However, the typical cinematography package with The Director’s Cut includes unlimited high-resolution photos, cinematic trailer and full movie.

So that photos can be shared with friends, family and loved ones, a private online portal allows couples to view content instantly, which makes it much easier to create your own personalised album. Included in the package is also a large, luxury leather-bound album, which is otherwise very expensive with other cinematography companies.

The typical package includes a full movie with special features such as pre wedding events, and a trailer. With video it has an interface like a Netflix film, with a beautiful menu system, which is perfect for presenting them to friends and family. Copies of the videos and photos can be downloaded as many times as you wish.

Whilst Asian wedding videos typically last between 1-3 hours, Amit & Kamal aim for their team to capture as much detail as possible - giving more, rather than less. This includes footage capturing the decor, group photos, the civil ceremony, etc.

More recently, clients are requesting a 20 minute cut, as well as a longer version. Around 80% of people choose the longer video for the trailer, whereas 20% prefer the short video. The cinematic trailer is often a ‘song length’ highlight of the movie itself.

The average package takes around 12-18 weeks to edit and produce, ready for sending to the married couple. Last year, Amit & Kamal’s team achieved an average of 12 weeks for their customers to receive all photos and videos.

Choosing Your Asian Wedding Cinematographer

Each wedding is unique and every couple will have their own requests, so discussing your vision with your cinematographer will help them make your vision come to life for that beautiful fairytale wedding film. It’s important to speak to your chosen photographer or videographer to understand the type of capture you are looking for.

With many wedding videographer and cinematographer companies varying in cost, style and quality, it can seem like a lot to choose from. Similar to many services you use for your special day, you’ll most likely get what you pay for, so it’s well worth doing some thorough research before committing to your chosen companies.

Some cinematographers tend to have additional cameramen with them on the day so that no footage is left uncaptured, so it’s worth taking this into account when planning the budget for your wedding cinematographer, as this can reflect in the cost.

When planning a wedding, most couples tend to plan a budget for four main components, including their photographer, venue, dress and decor, so usually, videographers and cinematographers tend to be an afterthought. This is why it’s recommended to not leave the booking of your videographer until last minute, as it can sometimes be costly.

If you’re figuring out whether videography or cinematography is the best approach for you, you should think about the feel and tone you envision for your wedding film and whether you’d like it to feel like a cinematic film or a home movie, as a cinematic film is more likely to be memorable and enjoyable to watch. You will also need to discuss with videographers and cinematographers on your vision and how they can make it come to life.

After consulting with your chosen cinematographer, it’s recommended to go away, look at their reviews and their previous portfolio. Consult with your cinematographer to discuss a pre-wedding shoot. This is a great opportunity for any bride and groom to feel relaxed and comfortable around the camera. It also provides more guidance in creating an itinerary and a plan before committing to the consultation.

What Happens at a Sikh Wedding?

At first glance, it may seem surprising to hear that if you are attending a Punjabi wedding, there is a good chance it will be conducted as a Sikh wedding ceremony. But this is not surprising. Sikhism originated in Punjab, so it only makes sense that most Sikhs are Punjabi and speak the Punjabi language. As a religion with a rich history and culture, there are many stages to the wedding and various customs you should be aware of.

Whether you are a wedding guest who is not part of the culture or you are simply not up to date with the traditions, you need to know what will be happening in the lead up to the wedding and on the big day itself.

What is the Significance of a Sikh Wedding?

Sikh wedding ceremonies do not focus on a single day. They are about the process of two people and two families coming together. This may be complicated when the couple are not both Sikh, but a combination of the Sikh culture and another. However, this always produces an absolutely unique wedding experience. Not only for the couple but their families and all of their guests.

The Sikh wedding ceremony is known as "Anand Karaj" which means 'Blissful Union". The Sikh marriage is a very colourful and unique ceremony in which two individuals are joined in a partnership of two equals. The couple will marry in front of the Guru Granth Sahib while the guests gather around the couple, usually with men on one side and women on the other.

There is significant spiritual and religious importance to the act. It is not merely a physical and legal contract but a sacrament, a union of two souls. The spiritual goal of any Sikh is to merge his or her soul (Atma) with God (Parmatma) and in marriage, the couple vow to help each other towards this goal.

The early part of the day is devoted to the religious ceremony which almost always takes place in a Sikh Gurdwara (Sikh temple).

How Far in Advance are Sikh Weddings Planned?

If you are planning on having a Sikh wedding or are part of the wedding party, you’ll need to know how much of a long term commitment you’re getting into. While this is unlikely to be too daunting for the bride and or groom if you’re a close friend helping with planning, it may seem overwhelming.

As with Hindu and Indian weddings, an enormous amount of planning has to go behind a Sikh wedding, not only for the day itself but for potentially several weeks leading up to it. Weddings are often planned a year in advance, with 6 months of pre-planning. This will help you deal with logistics, music, catering, transport, decorations and so much more.

Who is Invited?

Sikh weddings are a huge affair, with 600 to 1,000 guests in some cases. Therefore, almost all family and friends should expect to be invited to the affair. If you are a friend invited to the wedding, this is a really special privilege. Despite Sikh weddings being big events, it is vital to ensure that every family member, including from extended families, is invited before friends make it onto the guest list. So being invited as a friend is an honour.

What to Wear to a Sikh Wedding?

This can depend on what time of day and marriage ceremony is planned. As mentioned before, the morning will be spent at the Gurdwara, which will have a different dress code for the wedding reception afterwards.

When at the Gurdwara, you must ensure that you cover your head and remove your shoes. Modest dress is the order of the day; bare shoulders, plunging necklines and short skirts will be out of place at a religious venue. You will need to sit on the carpeted floor and will be expected to sit cross-legged or otherwise on the floor for at least 45 minutes. This will prove difficult in tight or short clothing, so dress accordingly.

It is a good idea to have a change of clothing for the reception, which will not take place in the Gurdwara. Less modest clothing will be fine for the reception and you can go all out with your dresses. Some ladies prefer to take a shawl that they can throw over their shoulders, and wear trousers to the Gurdwara, with a skirt underneath to change into at the reception. That way your outfit is acceptable at both venues.

What Will the Food Be Like?

In keeping with the lavishness of the wedding, Sikhs enjoy the finest food and desserts during weddings. Food is often served in the Gurdwara after the wedding ceremony. Sikhs are not uniformly vegetarian, so the menus often contain meat dishes. As a result, the food served at a Sikh wedding will be freshly made and delicious.

There is a lot of overlap with Punjabi and Sikh food and culture. Expect a lot of dishes you would be familiar with from Punjabi restaurants. This includes some classics like spinach curries (palak/saag paneer), Chickpea curries with bread (Chole bhature), tandoori chicken and karahi Chicken.

They are also less strict about alcohol compared to their Hindu and Muslim cousins, so you can expect there to be drink available. It is frowned upon to consume alcohol anywhere sacred or holy, so you can only really expect it at the wedding reception venue.

A Guide to Hindu Wedding Traditions & Ceremonies

The journey to the big day of an Asian wedding is a long one. There are a number of engagement traditions as well as general pre-wedding traditions and this only ramps up on the day of the wedding itself.

Hinduism is perhaps the oldest continuing religion in the world, with sacred texts estimated to date back to 3000 B.C. Many of its traditions have lasted for aeons, with origins lost in time. A Hindu wedding, one of the most sacred of rites, incorporates many of these timeless rituals and customs.

The Hindu Wedding Ceremony unites two souls spiritually, mentally and physically. The bond of matrimony is sacred and the ceremony of marriage is conducted according to Vedic traditions. The ceremony will be conducted in the ancient Hindu language of Sanskrit and translated to English by the priest.

The Baraat / The Jaan

The wedding day kicks off with the Baraat, the all-singing all-dancing wedding procession of the groom and his family. The Baraat can and often does include luxury cars, booming music, and a horse.

The groom leaves his home with his baraat (wedding procession) heading towards the wedding venue with his friends and relatives in tow. Once at the venue, the precession will commence will dhol players, a band or both to announce the arrival of the groom, his family and his friends.

Pokwanu - The Welcoming of The Groom

The brides family formally welcomes the Groom, his family & friends. The Bride’s mother applies a tilak on the Groom's forehead and then escorts the groom, his family and friends into the venue. He is then led inside and the priest performs a brief ceremony. Following this the mother of the bride grabs the nose of the groom playfully to remind him that it is he who has come to their home to ask for the hand of her daughter and he must make every effort to keep her daughter in good humour and comfort always.

The Groom will then be asked to smash a clay pot with his foot breaking it into pieces. This demonstrates that he has the power to overcome all the obstacles the couple may face in their married life. The groom is then escorted to the Mandap.

The Ganesh Puja

Before the ceremony begins, the Priest invokes Lord Ganesh, the Hindu elephant God that removes all obstacles, as a precursor to nuptials about to take place. The Ganesha Puja is performed by the Bride's parents, the ceremony begins by offering a prayer to Lord Ganesh requesting peace and harmony to prevail during the ceremony. Lord Ganesh’s blessings are sought for an auspicious beginning for the couple. Traditional Indian weddings are incomplete without Ganesh Puja.

Vaarpooja

The Bride’s parents perform a ceremony where they wash the Groom's feet, offer flowers and Madhuparka. It is stated in the Vedic scriptures that at the time of marriage the groom is a representation of Lord Vishnu. At the end of the ceremony, a veil of cloth (Antarpat) is held in front of the groom to prevent him from seeing the bride as she enters.

Kanya Aagman - The Arrival of the Bride

The bride is escorted by her maternal uncle(s) to the Mandap. Once the bride is in the mandap, verses (Manglashtak) are chanted as the veil is lowered and the couple exchanges flower garlands (Jai-Malas). The bride offers the first garland declaring that she has chosen the groom on her own free will. The groom will then return the compliment by offering her a garland welcoming her to a new life together and promising to look after her.

Granthibandan and Varmala

The Groom’s scarf is tied to the Bride’s shawl while chanting prayers to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Narayan and Goddess Laxmi Devi praying for a strong marriage like theirs. The knot symbolises the union of two souls joined together in Holy matrimony.

Kanyadan

This ceremony is performed by the Bride’s parents. They give away their daughter in marriage by placing her hand on the Groom’s right hand. The bride’s parents pray that their son-in-law will look after their daughter.

Havan

A small sacred fire is lit in the centre of the mandap inviting Agni. The Fire God, the symbol of light, power and purity while offering ghee, rice and flowers into the flame. These prayers have a special importance, for it is Agni who dispels darkness and ignorance in life and leads us to eternal light and knowledge.

Mangal Fera

The couple circle the Holy Fire four times as the priest chants Mantras. The Groom leads the Bride on the first three feras (Circles), while the Bride takes over for the fourth and final step-signifying balance in their marriage. The four fera’s represent the four basic goals of life: Dharma (Moral sense to lead a good life ), Artha (prosperity), kama (Energy and passion) and moksha (liberation through self- Realization).

When the couple make their last round together, they rush back to their seats. Racing to sit down first, As part of the tradition, it is said that whoever takes their seat first will be the ruler of the household.

Saptapadi - The Seven Steps

This is the most important rite of a Hindu marriage ceremony. The word, Saptapadi means "Seven steps." The couple take seven steps to symbolise the beginning of their journey together for life. The couple takes a vow at the beginning of each step as they receive blessings from the priest and everyone present.

Sindhoor & Mangal Sutra

After the seven steps, the marriage is and legally recognised in their faith. Now, as with the exchange of rings, ceremonies begin where both the groom and bride are identified as married to each other.

The Groom places Sindhoor at the parting of the Bride’s hair to symbolise that she is now a married woman. With the Mangal Sutra, the groom places a golden necklace with black beads around the bride’s neck, signifying his love, integrity and respect for her.

Celebrating the Marriage

Now the marriage ceremony is complete and the bride and groom are together, it is time for the family and friends to celebrate this.

Akhand Saubhagyavati – Blessings From Married Women

The married women are invited to greet the couple and whisper in the Bride’s right ear their blessings and good wishes of a blissful married life, prosperity and happiness.

Aashirwad – Blessings

The newly wedded couple then seek blessings from their priest, their parents, relatives and friends for a happy married life together.

End of the Ceremony

After lunch & photo’s the final part of the ceremony takes place. The couple leave the mandap, the Bride is given a handful of rice which she throws over her head behind her as she leaves to symbolise a repayment to her parents for all that they have given her throughout the years. The Bride will say a tearful farewell to each family member as she says goodbye to her maternal family and starts a new life with her husband & his family.

However, that's the end of the main ceremony! On to the grand reception, which is a whole other glamorous event in itself. It will naturally be far less tradition-laden than the actual wedding itself. Get ready for some great food and an evening of dancing.

What is the Significance of a Hindu Wedding?

Marriages, according to Hindu beliefs, are made in heaven and once you are married, the bond is supposed to last for seven lifetimes. It is considered to be a turning point in an individual’s life as he enters the second important phase or ashram of his life – the ‘Garhasthyaashram’.

A lot of importance is associated with marriages in Hinduism as it is considered to be one of the most important duties of a man’s life. Through marriage, he is paying his debt to his forefathers, by procreating children and ensuring the continuation of his family’s lineage.

Hindu weddings are a long process with various rituals that may take days to be executed. Every single custom and practice in a wedding ceremony has deep philosophical and spiritual significance. Throughout the world, Hindus adhere to these set of rituals and continue on the traditions of marriage that are unique amongst those in the world.

How Far in Advance are Hindu Weddings Planned?

If you are planning on having a Hindu wedding or part of the wedding party, you’ll need to know how much a long term commitment you’re getting into. A long term commitment shouldn’t seem so daunting if you’re the bride or groom given the context, but if you’re a close friend helping with planning, it may seem overwhelming.

A Hindu wedding venue will often be booked over a year in advance, so to avoid disappointment, at least six months of pre-planning is required and this will help you deal with logistics, music, catering, transport, decorations and so much more.

Who is Invited?

Everyone! A Hindu wedding is a big event in the life of the bride and groom. There are rarely small ceremonies or intimate Hindu weddings. It goes against a lot of the philosophies of the ceremony, so you can expect a big affair.

All the family and extended relatives are invited as well as close friends to the bridal party. Many of the rituals and ceremonies are big parties and celebrations so it makes a lot of sense for there to be a lot of guests. With the couple about to start their new adventure together, what better way to celebrate their new married life than a party?

What to Wear to a Hindu Wedding?

Brighter is better. Don't be afraid to wear a bold colour. This will help you fit in with the Indian guests who'll be dressed in vibrant colours and eye-catching jewellery. If you don't have a traditional sari, a jewel-tone dress with a shawl is appropriate too. It is acceptable to wear western formal wear to a Hindu celebration but it is encouraged to buy traditional attire.

For the men, suits are acceptable if that is what you are comfortable in. If you wish to wear something more traditional, there are a number of mens outfits that you can wear. The main two are Kurta Pajamas and Sherwanis. Bright colours are encouraged but choosing one you are most comfortable in is the main thing.

What Will the Food Be Like?

Two of the most common misconceptions about Indian food is that it's all spicy and it's all vegetarian. In reality, it depends on which state the couple's families are from. When served in the UK, though, the food tends to be North and West Indian.

There will be both food during the day and at the evening reception and there are some slight changes in the food options depending on the time. One example of this is that the naans are not served during the day but they will be available during the evening meal. Instead, puris or bathuras are served during the day.

There will be no meat allowed during the day if there has been a religious ceremony but at the evening reception there will likely be both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. This again can vary depending on the wedding and families but there are less restrictions. The food during the day may consist of two vegetarian curries, rice and dhal, puris or bathura’s, something savoury like samosas with chutney, popadums, pickles and something sweet like Shrikhand Gulba Jamun.

Indian weddings are definitely a time to show off, so what better way to show off than having the most rich and lavish dishes, and lots of them. This is what will happen at the evening reception, like any wedding there will be a wide array of exciting canapés or starters to enjoy. Alongside this there is the evening meal, expect lots of paneer, creamy curries, tandoori meat, and buttery naans. Often there is a dessert table, which typically includes cake, kulfi (Indian ice cream) and decorated sweets made from nuts. There can be sometimes up to four stations of chefs preparing food for guests.

How Long Does a Hindu Wedding Last?

A traditional Indian wedding can last up to five days, but most last for three days. An overview of the three days is traditionally the following:

1st Day – The Ganesh Puja otherwise known as the Mandap Muhurat & Pithi. This is often followed by a Mendhi night/Sangeet night.
2nd Day – Grah Shanti which is also called a Sathak/Mandvo or Mameru ceremony
3rd Day – Wedding celebration and usually an evening reception

On the first day, a priest will often perform the Ganesh Puja, a ceremony that usually happens at home with only the couple, the bridal party and close relatives in attendance. In all marriages, Ganesh Puja signals the start of the rest of the wedding rituals. The family will offer a prayer to Lord Ganesh, requesting peace and harmony to prevail during the ceremony. Lord Ganesh’s blessings are sought for an auspicious beginning for the couple.

Other things that occur on the first or second day is the mehndi ceremony. For this, the bride and her female friends and family members will have intricate henna patterns drawn on their hands and feet. That evening, the sangeet takes place. Every wedding guest is usually invited and it can involve the introduction of the couple's families, mingling, a meal and dances or other performances.

On the third day, the main wedding ceremony, cocktail hour and reception take place. You may be invited to the last day of the events or to any part of the three-day celebration.

The Hindu Wedding Rituals and Ceremonies

The reception is where the couple's families will throw a lavish reception party to finally let loose. In the Hindu context, the importance and sanctity of the wedding institution can be gauged from the fact that a number of rituals are performed to accomplish it.

Traditional Hindu marriages are performed with the utmost care and in accordance with ancient practices and Indian culture. A number of considerations are still taken into account before choosing a prospective match. A lot more thought goes into a Hindu wedding compared to a traditional Christian or western wedding.

Western Guests: Western or Indian Clothing?

Many western wedding guests are often unsure of whether they should wear a traditional Indian outfit or whether they should stick to a western dress. Ultimately, it is up to you and what you need to wear to feel comfortable and confident. However, at most Indian weddings, western guests are encouraged to wear a traditional Indian outfit.

What Not To Wear to a Hindu Wedding

Before we go over all the events and clothing options you’re going to have for a traditional Indian wedding, let’s address some big fashion faux pas.

Clothing Colour - You Are Encouraged to Wear Bright Colours

The first one that applies to any wedding ceremony is you are encouraged to wear bright colours rather than blacks and whites. You can wear white and black in certain events or situations as the fashion has changed over the years but it is more traditional to wear brighter colours.

Hindu ceremony is all about celebration and colour, so you will really get into the spirit of the celebration if you are sporting colourful garments. Whether you are wearing traditional Indian clothes or not, colour is encouraged.

Red usually should also be avoided since this is the colour that the bride tends to wear. In general, if you are close with the family you should check to see what colours they are wearing. This will allow you to avoid clashing with them. For example, even wearing a saree with black in it is acceptable as long as the immediate family aren’t wearing the same.

Don’t Forget to Accessorise

Finally, a rookie mistake that many first-timers make at an Indian wedding is to adorn themselves with a gorgeous outfit that is bereft of any ‘Indian’ accessories. A saree or a lehenga looks incomplete if not accessorised with the right jewellery.

For your ears, pick a pair of jhumkas (traditional bell shaped earrings) or chaand balis (traditional earrings). Do not leave the neck unadorned. Even a simple gold chain with a sparkling pendant will do the trick in completing the outfit.

Last but not least, wear at least a couple of bangles on each hand for that Indian touch.

What to Wear to an Indian Engagement Party

An engagement party precedes a wedding in India. The engagement is held a few months to a year before, once the couple announce they are getting married it is customary for them to get engaged as soon as possible to avoid wider society talking about them in a negative way.

Female Guests

If you are a female guest attending an engagement party, then this is your opportunity to flaunt your dressy semi-formal or contemporary clothing. There are no rules to dressing up to an engagement party and you certainly don’t have to wear anything overtly traditional. Quirky draped sarees, Chanderi palazzo pants with kurtis, shararas, lehenga cholis, Indian gowns - anything goes as far as the engagement is concerned.

Male Guests

A male guest can wear trousers and a shirt with a formal jacket or a traditional suit. As mentioned before, you can wear something more traditional with Hindu culture by sporting a kurta pyjama.

In terms of accessories, all that you need is a wristwatch and a pair of mojris to complement your outfit if you are wearing a kurta. The dupatta can be skipped during the engagement because it is something that would ideally be worn by the groom and his immediate family members.

Wedding Party

If you belong to the family of the couple, then you definitely need to be well-dressed for the occasion since this would be the first time that you would be meeting the other family in a formal setting.

Try choosing understated and elegant styles that exude a touch of class and sophistication. Anarkalis and sarees in rich fabrics and subtle hues with minimal embroidery work well for women.

Men can wear a kurta with a well-fitted churidar and dress it up with a jacket. The mother and father of the bride and groom can set themselves apart by wearing dressier outfits and choosing heavy pieces of jewellery to accessorise their outfits.

What to Wear to the Mehendi Ceremony

Mehndi (also referred to as mehndi or henna) is an ancient form of body art, originating in India and across South Asia and the Middle East.

A Mehndi party is the pre-wedding celebration in Hindu and Sikh culture when the bride has the red-orange mehndi "stain" applied to her palms, back of hands, and feet. Typically held a few days before or a day before the wedding, the event often has a lounge feel, with colourful pillows. It is held before the wedding as the mehndi darkens in colour over a few days which is what the Bride will want.
